How I do it

As a professional resume writer, I can write professional resumes, cover letters and LinkedIn profiles for ANYONE and achieve results. I follow the traditional five-step writing process: Prewriting, Writing, Revision, Editing and Publishing.

1. Prewriting

I start with a blank page just like everyone else (should). I do not use “cookie-cutter” resume templates. Prewriting helps me learn everything I need to know about you. I may ask you to complete a questionnaire to capture essential information. We discuss your career, the past, present and future. I need to identify everything we need before we can start. Once I have your information, I will conduct research into the job market to find current opportunities and align your skills with job market requirements.

2. Writing

Now I have done my research and got your information, and I can start writing the first rough draft of your new resume. You can forget about word count and grammar at this stage (although I make few errors). It is important that I write compelling content that is relevant to and optimised for the job you want. I often write at night as it eliminates potential distractions. Once the first rough draft is ready, I will forward it to you for review.

3. Revision

Your resume can change a great deal during this stage. When reviewing your resume, it is important that you be comfortable with the language I use. Recruiters and Hiring Managers will ultimately hold you accountable for the content in your resume. For the most part, a resume is written using sentence fragments with no personal narratives. The average resume I write has around 1500 words across three pages (optimum). This will include all the information about you and the job you want.

At this stage, you can make changes to the resume, be it additions or omissions, changes in structure, style and/or layout. The most effective way for me to revise your resume is to ask for your opinion. Do you need more vivid details to help clarify your work? Is one scene contradicting another? Take a look and give you feedback, and if something is not working for your, I will rewrite it and replace it. It is your resume. They are your accomplishments. Be proud of your career achievements.

4. Editing

Now I have overhauled your resume it is time to fine-tune your resume line by line. Check for repetition, clarity, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Editing is an incredibly detailed process, and it is best performed by a professional. I will read and examine your resume to remove any mistakes. I use two different software programs to re-read and re-examine your resume for any spelling and grammatical errors. Then I will re-read and re-examine your resume one final time. You should too!

5. Publishing

Congratulations! Your new resume is ready. You are ready to apply for jobs. It is essential in completing any job application that you customise your resume and cover letter. This may sound like a daunting task, but it is not. Just use the information provided in the job advertisement to tailor your elevator pitch and skills to match. Add any missing skills and omit anything else not relevant to the application.
